Whether you’re just considering launching your own business or you’ve been going for a while and are getting ready to launch some new services or niche down or get more focused, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all of the things that you ‘have’ to be, do and have.

Well, I’ve got some good news… you don’t have to be, do or have even half of what you think you need to.

Here are my top 5 things you don’t need to get started.

Number 1 – To be Ready

It’s always some variation of these things:

‘When I have just one more certificate, then I’ll be ready’. ‘When I’ve worked on my mindset and feel more confident, then I’ll be ready’. ‘When I save up just a little more money, then I’ll be ready’. ‘When I have my whole business completely planned out for the next 5 years and on paper, then I’ll be ready’. Or, my personal favourite: ‘when I have all my tech set-up, then I’ll be ready’.

It’s all a myth! You’ll never be ready! You’ll never have enough certificates, you’ll never have enough money, you’ll never be confident enough, you’ll never have your tech perfectly set-up and you’ll never have planned enough! It’s like that old saying: ‘walk the path and the path appears’. If you’re waiting to have all your ducks in a row, you’ll be waiting a life-time. Just start and your ducks will fall into line. It might not be the ducks you had planned, but ducks will definitely fall into line. (Too much with the ducks? :-))

The key is to just start. There’s someone I really admire in my industry. She’s quite a big deal actually and everything she produces is seems perfect.  She’s been in the industry for maybe 10 years or so. I recently watched one of her very early videos and lots of things struck me…. They made it and her real:

The videos she was using for her signature programme (the one that made her a millionaire), were clearly filmed on a phone (I’m guessing you probably have one of those), her back-drop was a make-shift sheet hanging from the ceiling. Her make-up was a little like my own, self-done and probably in a hurry. There was no special lighting. She tripped over her own words a couple of time. There were no bells & whistles and in the middle of it, she talked about how her business model was changing (that’s right!! You can change what’s not working in your business AFTER you’ve started). If she’d never started imperfectly, she wouldn’t be here now and so many of the people she’s helped would be worse off for it.

Start where you are with what you’ve got, or you’ll never start. Make your desire to create a thriving business stronger than your excuses.

Number 2 – A bucket load of cash

So, obviously this might depend on your industry, but most of my clients are service based businesses and this is true for them. Working with what you’ve got right now might mean that you can’t offer exactly what you want, but by offering something, you enable yourself to earn the cash that will help you to develop your offering. Look to role models in your industry and I guarantee that the most successful, won’t have started with what they have right now! It took starting small to enable them to make it big!

Grab a pen and paper and write out exactly what you can invest in the business right now – cash, resources, people, technology you already own, skills & capabilities, even the environment you have to work in.

Now with that list, work out the best service you can offer to your clients right now. Package that and start selling.

It doesn’t have to be the whole bells & whistles deal to get started.

Number 3 – The best of the best technology.

  • Magnificent, fully SEO enhanced website? Nope!
  • Top of the range camera for video? Nope!
  • Perfectly integrated payment, email & admin systems? Nope!
  • State of the art video editing suite? Nope!
  • All singing & dancing book-keeping soft-ware? Nope!

I mean, yes, all those things would be nice to have but stop using not having them as an excuse not to launch your business, service or new project. Getting started with what you have means, one day you will have the cash to have all these wonderful things. If you’re waiting to have them, you never will.

For right now, your social channels can be your website. You can use things like MailerLite to create your sales pages for people who want to find out more about your offering. If you have a smart-phone, your camera is perfectly fine for creating any video content you need. You can use PayPal or a good old bank transfer to accept payments. There are a tonne of editing programmes that you can use on your phone to create edits and even video production can be done economically using ring and desktop lights that can be bought relatively cheaply – there’s also the good old ‘standing in natural light’ trick! As for book-keeping, there are these really awesome things – one is a spreadsheet and if you have a computer with Microsoft on it, then you’ve got it. The other is good old pen and paper.

Done is better than perfect so use what you have right now.

Number 4 – Oodles and oodles of spare time.

‘I don’t have time’… the biggest excuse for not getting started that I’ve heard, that I’ve used (and will likely continue to use at times – I mean, I am human), and that I’ve seen kill amazing ideas long before they had a chance to become reality.

I get it! Life is busy! If you know me at all, you’ll know how crazy my own life is BUT, remember this is about getting started. It’s not about making a million right now. It’s not about being the absolute number one in your industry right now. It’s not about having all of the clients right now. It’s not about having your goal, right now – if you had it, you wouldn’t need to do anything right now!

It’s about what you can do – you guessed it – right now!

Like before, grab a pen, sheet of paper and your diary. How can you make time in your schedule right now for this new project? How much time can you make? It really doesn’t matter if it’s an hour a week, 10 hours a week, or 40 hours a week. Just be realistic. What time can you actually give to the project? Don’t be overly ambitious, because that just leads to overwhelm and self-bashing when you find you can’t sleep for 3 days because you’ve over committed yourself.

Now get brainstorming on what exactly you can offer within that time. Like before, it likely won’t be your full offering but it’s a start and when you start you can build. Think of a house, this is where you’re building the foundation. If you don’t build the foundation, there is no house.

Number 5 – Masses of confidence (or what is perceived to be confidence).

You don’t need to be fearless. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need to be completely fine with standing on a stage or pitching your ideas, or even showing up online. You don’t need to walk with your head in the air or be on your A-Game all of the time.

Starting a new business, launching a new service or beginning a new project is scary! You are allowed to feel nervous. You are allowed to have those little moments of self-doubt and worry. You’re human. Fearlessness is just a myth, so don’t beat yourself up because you feel a little scared.

All those things that masquerade as confidence, are really just the result of confidence and you can’t have the result without having confidence itself. All confidence really is, is knowing! It’s knowing that you have a good idea. It’s knowing that no matter what happens, it will work out ok. It’s knowing that doing something to get going is better than doing nothing. It’s knowing that you are good at what you do and knowing that you belong where you are and where you’re going.

When you know these things, you practice doing things that scare you. You practice setting short and long term goals, knowing that things might change as you go. You practice becoming visible more and more until, before you know it, you’re a whizz at showing up online.

They say practice makes perfect… I don’t really believe in perfection, but practice is ACTION, and it is action that will bring your idea, project or service to life. So, work on the knowing and the things you see as confidence will come with practice.

I guess that what I’m essentially saying here is to start right now with what you’ve got, and the rest will come. If you don’t, you’ll never start.
